Mario Bava was one of the most underrated filmmakers of the 20th century. So it’s appropriate that the first volume of the “Mario Bava Collection” (or “Bava Box”) was one of the best releases of the last year, and reintroduced us to classics of Bava’s that had fallen out of view. The second volume just continues that tradition, with big chunks of classic, stylish horror.

“Baron Blood” begins the collection — Baron Otto Van Kleist was a savage, depraved guy who liked to torture people for fun (think Vlad Tepes), until a witch’s curse put him out of commission. Centuries later, his descendent Peter (Antonio Cantafora) returns to his family’s gothic castle, and decides that he and visiting student Eva (Elke Sommer) will recite the incantation that will return “Baron Blood” to the world. Of course, he actually DOES return, and soon Peter, Eva and Peter’s uncle are forced to battle his psychotic, deformed ancestor.

“Lisa and the Devil” is more or less what it sounds like, with our heroine Lisa (Elke Sommer) a tourist going through Italy. She encounters some freaky folklore involving a local painting of the Devil and the Dead — and a man (Telly Savalas) who eerily resembles the painted Satan. When her travel group is invited by the man to stay at a spooky villa, Lisa becomes ensnared in a maze of nightmares and death.

Then we get something that ISN’T gothic horror — “Roy Colt and Winchester Jack,” a comedy-western. Failed outlaw Roy Colt (Brett Halsey) has decided to become a law-abiding sheriff — until he learns of a treasure map to buried gold. Of course, he scurries after it — but to get his hands on it, he’ll have to beat out an Indian prostitute, a dynamiting Russian Reverand, and his old partner Winchester Jack (Charles Southwood).

Then it’s “Four Times That Night,” a colourful, campy take on Akira Kurosawa’s”Rashomon.” Suave Gianni (Brett Halsey) starts pursuing shy, chaste Tina (Daniela Giordano), until she agrees to date him. The night ends with his face scratched and her dress shredded — at first glance, you’d think he just got too grabby, and she fought him off. But there are four different versions of what happened that night, and none of them agree…

Then it’s back to gore and horror, with one of the very first slasher flicks. “Bay Of Blood” opens with the death of a countess and her murdering husband. After their demise, the area is crowded with real-estate agents, entomologists, secret heiresses and sex-mad teens looking for a place to party. Then, of course, they start dying off… and not just from one person.

Finally we get “Five Dolls For An August Moon,” a remake of Agatha Christie’s “Ten Little Indians”: Wealthy industrialist George Stark (Teodoro Corrà) gathers a group of friends and associates on his private island, trying to get a new formula from chemist Fritz Farrell (William Berger). As the guests get tangled in sexual and business intrigues, someone starts murdering them…

Unlike many directors, Mario Bava didn’t need massive budgets or CGI to create his brilliant movies — just good actors and a haunting backdrop. Gothic castles with dungeons, misty forests, psychedelic islands and clubs, eerie villas, and the dangerous streets of Italy are all used here, and performances that range from brilliant (Steele) to merely good (Halsey).

In fact, Bava was such a brilliant director that he take a cliche or subpar movie (such as “Baron Blood”), and turn it into something unique and deep. He made use of misty lighting, eerie camerawork, exquisite use of light and shadow, gory deaths and odd symbolism. A few also splash in some psychedelic colour and sex. And he was usually able to work in an unexpected, sometimes shocking twist to each movie’s ending.

“Mario Bava Collection Volume 2″ is a collection of five excellent movies, ranging from brilliant to enjoyable. And it’s a good demonstration of Bava’s talents, and the kinds of movies he could undertake — a treasure for horror buffs.

Having just picked this up, I thought I’d chime in with this second box set from Anchor Bay. While the comparison will seem strange, Like Orson Welles, and this is speaking from public perception, Mario Bava’s debut film, ‘Black Sunday’, was so impressive that many of his subsequent releases were dismissed as sub par or viewed as schlock. Of course, many of these critics overlooked the consistent artistry that could be found throughout Bava’s filmography.

While Volume 1 focused on a number of his most iconic and famous films from the early to mid sixties, Volume 2 focus’ on his late 60s til mid 70s output, to good effect I might add. His film, ‘Four Times That Night’ (1968), is a sex comedy with a Rashomon flavored theme. A mild mannered man, and a seemingly virtuous woman have a date, which leads to the kind of mishap that triggers three wildly different perspectives, from the man, woman and a spectator. It’s very much a film of the late sixties, fun, good film, but not great. A fair share of nudity and sexual content, which makes it not accessible for minors, fair warning.

‘5 Dolls For an August Moon’ (1970) features several impressive visual sequences and succeeds due to some great art direction. A young scientist with an industrial formula to sell, has invited a group of rich industrialist to a small island, along with their wives or lovers. Everyone has a range of motives when the guests and scientist start to be killed off. This even has elements of a spy thriller, via ‘Diabolik’ at certain moments. Apparently this film has divided critics of Bava. It’s a pretty good attempt at a non occult thriller.

Bava has been so tied to his reputation as a director of horror pictures, people tend to not realize he was varied enough to work in the Western genre, as well as sword and sandal Viking pictures, which makes ‘Roy Colt and Winchester Jack’ (1970) a fun picture. A satirical Western with an affectionate nod to Sergio Leone, a pair of good-natured outlaws on a hunt for a fortune in gold. While not a masterpiece, it demonstrates that Bava could work in the Western genre with a twist. Having said that, it’s basically cashing in on the success of ‘Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid’.

Next up, ‘Bay of Blood’ (1971) a.k.a. ‘Twitch of the Death Nerve’. One of the seminal films in the development of the slasher horror genre. Much has been written already about the ways in which Sean Cunningham and Miner borrowed from this film in the making of the first two ‘Friday the 13th’ films. Bava’s film is not for the faint of heart, yet unlike the FT13 films, there’s a plausible motive behind most of the killings, the greed of a family inheritance. Feminist film critics will often dismiss Bava for being a misogynist, yet often in Bava’s pictures women are just as capable to commit murder as men, aside from the fact that Bava shows a real reverence towards women, as complicated souls with desires. Some have dismissed this film and yet, unlike many slasher films where there’s a detached focus on the spectacle of violence, one is left not comfortable with the carnage. There’s a black, fatalistic, ironic view and subtext here about how violence feeds on itself, as well as an ecological theme that is highly skeptical for the need for humanity.

For most Bava fan’s, ‘Baron Blood’ (1972) has remained a favorite, featuring a good and menacing performance from Joseph Cotton as the resurrected Baron. Elke Sommer’s performance isn’t as memorable as her role in ‘Lisa’, which we’ll get to in a moment. Bava has always excelled at producing Gothic horror and he delivers this film with a lot of flare. The modern relative of Otto von Kleist, the infamous Baron of the 16th Century, inadvertently resurrects the Baron from the ancient spell of a witch he burned at the stake. Cotton manages a good, menacing and slightly off performance until the revelation of his character.

The less that’s said about ‘The House of Exorcism’, the better, in spite of the fact that Lamberto Bava assisted with the re-shoots. ‘Lisa and The Devil’ (1973) is another matter. Lisa, a tourist, sees a fresco of the devil leading away the dead, and this triggers her into a Labyrinth of a dark fable. Is this her fevered imagination? Is she being lured by the devil? Is she the resurrected spirit of a lover from another era? ‘Lisa’ is Bava’s most surreal, cryptic and layered film as well as beautiful. Telly Savalas is wonderful as a charming, sophisticated and ruthless beelzebubb. Elke Sommer delivers a compelling performance. A definite break from the usual supernatural film.

‘Rabid Dogs’ (1974) a.k.a. ‘Kidnapped’, would have been the definitive final statement from Bava had it seen a proper release. Sadly, when the film’s financier died, his entire estate as well as the print of the film was seized by the Italian Court. A marked stylistic difference from Bava’s other work, a gritty Euro-Crime drama. During a botched payroll heist, a trio of criminals hijack a woman and a man who is driving a sick child to a hospital. The degradation of the woman is probably one of the most disturbing aspects. A very gritty film that one could see as a real inspiration for a director like Tarantino.

This second set is a little more thin in the extras. Unlike the special segments produced for the ‘Black Sunday, Girl Who Knew Too Much’, and ‘Black Sabbath’. The only new special segments added are from ‘Kidnapped’, and that disc was already released as a separate package. Considering, that I believe at this writing, Elke Sommer is still alive, I’m surprised that no new interviews were conducted for her reflections about working on ‘Baron Blood’ or ‘Lisa’. There are new commentaries from Bava expert, Tim Lucas for ‘Lisa and the Devil, Baron Blood’ and ‘Bay of Blood’, all excellent, the commentary for ‘Bay of Blood’ is a little looser for a Lucas commentary. An additional older commentary of ‘Lisa’ with Elke Sommer and Alfredo Leone is included. All of the film prints are excellent and presented in the usual widescreen ratios of 1.85:1 or 1.78:1. The films ‘5 Dolls’ and ‘Four Times’ are included on a duel disc. Many of the films include trailers, radio spots, or Poster and still galleries. Unfortunately, there’s no production liner notes in any of the sets or updated biographies. Thus, the reason for the rating.

Hopefully, this will do well enough to give Anchor Bay grounds to release more titles. Pardon the length, Bava’s work is frequently unforgettable, beautiful, macabre, disturbing and unique, don’t miss this.

I’ve got to admit that I also love the Bundy’s and can’t believe how long it is taking them to release all of the seasons of such a funny and classic show of the ’90’s. I know that I’ll be pre-ordering it immediately! Hooray for Married With Children!!

I give this review four stars because one of the original cast is gone now. I am speaking of David Garrison who left Married…With Children in the middle of the sitcom’s fourth season to continue broadway roles. It was written that Garrison’s character Steve Rhoades, who had lost his job as an accountant, unmercifully left his beautiful, endearing wife Marcy(Amanda Bearse) and became a forest ranger. So Marcy is still single until mid-season when she marries playboy Jefferson D’Arcy(Happy Days veteran Ted McGinley) in her sleep!(she woke up with a wedding ring on one of her fingers and not the same one she wore during her marriage to Steve). The Bundys hold a backyard wedding for Mr. and Mrs. D’Arcy. Peggy(Katey Sagal) plays her accordion at the wedding. Bud(David Faustino) tried numerous times to score with Marcy,post-Steve and pre-Jefferson. Other highlights this season include the Bundys in a brawl with another family of four during Labor Day weekend gridlock. Al(Ed O’Neill) and Kelly(Christina Applegate) spend time on their living room sofa while they both battle nasal congestion. The Bundys in court with a civil lawsuit against someone they had a road collision with. Al is prepared with a briefcase that will contain the lawsuit cash. Dr. Joyce Brothers,a former advice columnist, played the presiding judge. Marcy even testified at the trial(she witnessed a Mercedes was involved in the collision). She whined and complained about that very same car that Steve had(”He left me like parsley on a plate at a truck stop diner!”). Kelly becomes a model for an automobile commercial. Gilligan’s Island veteran Tina Louise plays the casting director. Also,Al makes Peggy jealous by receiving numerous attention from shapely beauties who witness him lifting a heavy couch. Also, for the beauties’ sake,he changes his ways! He showers and brushes his teeth regularly! He even quit wearing his Hanes briefs! Peggy wanted the old Al back. And Al went back to his old, usual self. Al takes a job as a night watchman at his alma mater,Polk High School where Bud is a student and Kelly and Peggy are alumni of themselves. There’s the two-part “You Better Shop Around”,which is available on Most Outrageous Episodes,Part 2. The Bundys,in that episode, seek shelter in a supermarket, and Al accidentally becomes the one millionth customer of the day. He stepped ahead of Marcy who was in the checkout line since he only had a pack of chewing gum. As Al was checked out, balloons and confetti fell. Marcy was bitching that she was originally the next in line. Al says to her,”You still are!”. Then Al checks out a headline in the National Enquirer which reads “Steve Rhoades to marry Cher”. Marcy couldn’t wait to check out that headline about her ex-husband. The other episodes are great. McGinley was billed as a guest star this season, since he had not joined MWC at the beginning. He guest-starred in the season 4 two-part episode “It’s A Bundyful Christmas” which Fox aired as a whole on December 24,1989. McGinley’s character was Norman Jablonski, who appeared in a dream that Al had. In the dream,Norman was the household patriarch instead of Al! 5 down,6 to go.

I was anxious for this movie to come out, because I liked Wrong Turn part 1 and part 2 alot. But this movie was a disappointment for me. It looks very low budget and just seemed boring to me. I bought it instead of renting it, because I own the other two. But I would recommend renting this before buying it, unless you are like me and just buy it to have all three.

I, too, was very excited about Wrong Turn 3, as I thought Wrong Turn 2 was the better of the first two, and the thing about being too gory for theatres really was tempting. Ok, it’s kids and convicts getting done in by Three Fingers, but I like these movies for their graphic special effects, and there was no shortage (though it is hard to beat Kimberly Caldwell being chopped in two in 2). I was disappointed that there was really only one antagonist. I liked when there was a whole family of mutants — it really gave more interest into the type of people (?) they were and why all of this was going on. But Three Fingers is getting that Jason quality of you just can’t seem to get rid of him. The ending was very cool though…two kills in about thirty seconds AND the distinct possibility of Wrong Turn 4 coming around the bend. It may be wearing old, but I will definitely be checking another sequel out should there be one! Now I’m wondering if and what a Hostel 3 might be!

Addio Zio Tom: 7 out of 10: Well they do not make them like this anymore, and let us face it they never really did. This is really three separate films brought together in a blender, set on random. The first film is a highly effective expose on slave treatment and the slave trade in the old south, (the slave ship scenes blows Hollywood fare like Armistad out of the water). Using a cast of thousands and exposing practices such as selective breeding that are politely not discussed on American shores (just ask Jimmy the Greek.) It simply is one of the most realistic display’s of 18th and 19th century slave life ever shown on film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Shockumentary : Extreme Collection (Africa Addio - Director’s Cut / Addio Zio Tom! Click Here

Then there is a second film. This is a dated and looking back rather silly collection, of news footage from the late sixties and early seventies that documents race riots. In addition, all the participants speak in Italian. This creates an almost Woody Allen feel to the dub (It gives What’s up Tiger Lilly a run for its money complete with ragtime music cementing the silliness of what should be serious proceedings.)

The last movie is a sexploitation film dealing largely with Mandingo fantasies and containing a copious amount of child porn. (I guess National Geographic rules apply when showing thirteen-year-old Hatian children naked). Tasteful does not enter into the conversation. Political correctness is shattered so badly one must feel for those sensitive souls that cannot laugh at ridiculousness of the manipulation.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Shockumentary : Extreme Collection (Africa Addio - Director’s Cut / Addio Zio Tom! Click Here

Making matters worse, the three films are intertwined together seemingly at random with comic buffoonery breaking out during serious scenes. For example, a slave auction is apt to turn into a Benny Hill episode for no apparent reason. Add on a poorly done black revenge fantasy coming, narratively at least, out of nowhere. Anti-white, anti-black and for the apparent sake of inclusion anti-Semitic they once again simply do not make them like this anymore. (It is illegal for one thing)

Overlong by at least an hour and very poorly thought out in places Addio Zio Tom wears out its welcome but for a short while, at least it exposes the truth and makes one think.

This topic has been ignored and should be part of the full understanding of the era.

Movie Title: Amen
Average customer review:

Amen is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Amen

The relationship between the Vatican and the Third Reich has been a very hot topic recently, as new documents and scholarly works have served to ignite a massive debate. Could the church have done more, did they aid the Nazi’s covertly, was Pope Pius XII a coward in the face of Hitler? These are all relevant questions that deserved to be answered. Into the debate steps Amen, an effective drama directed by Costa Gavras, which, while looking at the actions of the church hierarchy during the war, concentrates more on the low level relationship, which I consider much more fascinating. The movie is an interesting look at morality and responsibility in the most troubling of times.

The movie’s protagonist, interestingly enough, is SS officer Kurt Gerstein, played by the subdued Ulrich Tukur. Gerstein is a chemist by trade, and is promoted because of his ability to create extremely effective “anti-vermin” pesticides, such as forms of Zycklon-B. Gerstein is stunned to discover, as he stares into a gas chamber, that his formula’s are being used for far more than animal extermination. The realization changes his life, and Gerstein, a devout Catholic, gives the information and more to a well-connected Italian priest, Father Riccardo. Riccardo’s family is close to the Pope, and the two unlikely allies feel they can effectively move the church against the Nazi regime. They have a precedent, considering that a Catholic uproar ended the SS sponsored extermination of the mentally handicapped. However, the two soon find that the church is hesitant to challenge Germany, for numerous reasons, including their hatred for Stalin’s Russia, their anti-Semitic attitudes, and their fear of decreased power in Nazi dominated Europe. It’s a wait and see attitude that is getting millions killed. Both men are locked in their moral duty, even as those they trusted fail them, time and time again.

Amen is a stylish film that uses the rich history of Europe to lend a foreboding atmosphere to the entire situation. The Vatican shots are amazing, as are the Berlin and, horrifyingly, the camp scenes. The acting is good all around especially Tukur’s portrayal of the tortured SS officer, unsure of where to turn. While it may make some leaps of faith that are factually baseless, it does shed an interesting light on those times. It’s ending is a haunting one, as was history’s verdict. A good film.

Based on a true story, *Amen* is an important, and heretofore unexamined, angle in cinema’s ongoing grappling with the Holocaust: the complicity of the Catholic Church with the Third Reich’s “Final Solution”. Important BECAUSE the subject hasn’t been examined in film. Precise, too; the movie is concerned with the murder of the Jews in particular. Early in *Amen*, we see the German Catholic Church put a stop to the euthanizing of what the Nazi Party calls “unproductive citizens”, e.g., people with Down’s Syndrome and, indeed, any who suffer from mental illness. The local archbishop threatens the Nazi bureaucrats with exposure to world opinion, and thunders indignant, logical arguments from the pulpit (”‘Unproductive!’ And what of injured soldiers returning from the front? Are they ‘unproductive’, too?” etc.). But the thing is, these mentally ill were baptized as Christians. The JEWS, on the other hand. . . . Director Costa-Gavras gives them an unlikely champion: an SS officer and chemist Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur) whose creation of a cleansing agent, designed to filter contaminated drinking water for the troops at the front, becomes a primary tool in the mass-murder campaign by the German government. The chemist, a devout Protestant, is horrified when he discovers to what uses his invention is being put. He is eventually brought to a concentration camp, and is more or less forced to view a gassing through a peep-hole on a gas-chamber door. Thankfully, WE’RE spared the sight. Indeed, we “see” almost no atrocities: Costa-Gavras assumes we’re intelligent and moral enough to already know that genocide is evil. (Obviously a faulty assumption, considering that this movie received almost zero attention from audiences and critics. We clearly need piles of bodies displayed with Barber’s *Adagio for Strings* swelling in the background, and a Schindler-like hero played by a robust and good-looking Irishman.) Instead, he shows us the hideous paperwork, the incessant criss-crossing of the cattle-cars (empty one way, full the other way) . . . the whole damnable mechanical PROCESS of the Holocaust. Gerstein decides to be the “eyes and ears” of this process, and even tries to slow it down in his fumbling way by hysterically claiming that THIS batch of chemicals is leaking from their canisters and must be destroyed, THAT batch won’t be ready for months, and so on. Meanwhile, having learned that the Church managed to stop the murdering of the mentally ill, Gerstein appeals to the local diocese. Upon informing the local big-wig prelate that the Nazis are systematically wiping out the Jews, the prelate muses suspiciously, “Are you even Catholic?” But he DOES get the attention of a fictional young Jesuit, Father Riccardo (played with agonizing understatement by Mathieu Kassovitz). Riccardo becomes determined that Pope Pius XII should learn of the atrocities . . . and is fiercely checked by the Church bureaucracy and finally by the Pope Himself. *Amen* savagely attacks the Church in general and the Pope in particular: it’s rather telling that Costa-Gavras could find no single figure to base Riccardo upon, but had to create an amalgam from various (and doubtless feeble) voices in the Church hierarchy at that time. Some may complain that Riccardo is merely a symbol of Good, and that another character in the film, known only with chilling anonymity as “The Doctor”, is just Evil personified. But I think enough ambiguity is provided by Gerstein himself: we like him, we identify with him, we sympathize with his disgust, we encourage his attempts to alert the world, but we also feel uneasy that he remains in his position as SS Lieutenant. What IS the truth about Gerstein? We’ll never truly know what was in his heart; we only know what he documented about the process of the gassings, after he was incarcerated after the war. Was he trying to condemn his murderous colleagues, or merely hoping to absolve his own continued participation? Or both? Perhaps Riccardo and the Doctor, both fictional, represent his own divided soul.

As I’ve mentioned before this TCM greatest classic film series is all about bringing classic film to the masses at an affordable price. These four films are bare-bones releases of Warner Home Video’s WWII classics. Three of them can be found in the boxed set World War II Collection, Vol. 1 - Battlefront Europe (The Big Red One Two-Disc Special Edition / The Dirty Dozen / Battle of the Bulge / Battleground / Where Eagles Dare). For some reason Kelly’s Heroes has not been upgraded since 2000. It is one of the great offbeat wartime comedies, so I can’t imagine why it has been ignored. Thus in this particular case you are probably getting a better deal than those of us who own the stand-alone DVD of this film. The Dirty Dozen now exists as a two disc special edition - The Dirty Dozen (Two-Disc Special Edition) for those who are interested. Although “Dirty Dozen” is indeed one of the great war films, I think my personal favorite is “Battleground”. Directed by William Wellman it is about the 101st airborne while it is being besieged by the Germans during the Christmas of 1944. I highly recommend this set for its economy and quality.

Warner’s TCM GREATEST CLASSIC FILMS COLLECTION is a series of over two dozen twin packs. The four titles in each set are dubbed one per side on two flip discs. Except for promo trailers there’s no bonus features, but what you –do– get are quality transfers of well-preserved ever-popular films, at one low price.

My personal fave in “Battlefront Europe” is KELLY’S HEROES. Saw it twice in a row one Sunday afternoon in 1970 and the next day purchased a 45 of the title song, “Burning Bridges” by the Mike Curb Congregation (MGM).

SYNOPSES–

BATTLEGROUND

Elements of this picture are evident in the “Bastogne” episode of HBO’s BAND OF BROTHERS (2001). Both that mini-series chapter and “Battleground” are about men of the 101st Airborne and their wintry ordeal during the “Bulge.” Surrounded, outnumbered, with little food, warm clothes or ammo and under near-constant artillery barrage, about all that can be done is to hunker down and pray. Director William Wellman created here one of the most realistic of all war films.

THE DIRTY DOZEN

The best known in this set is also the most “Hollywood” of them all. Robert Aldrich directed an all-star cast in Nunnally Johnson’s screenplay about an Army major who trains 12 hardened criminals for a suicide mission behind German lines. Their targets are enemy staff officers taking R&R at a well-guarded chateau.

KELLY’S HEROES

This grim WWII comedy was almost Donald Sutherland’s undoing, for he nearly died from hepatitis during the Yugoslavian shoot. After-effects of his illness are visible in final scenes, where Sutherland looks haggard, thin and has red circles under his eyes. The movie itself is about a small group of American soldiers who go behind enemy lines to steal millions in gold ingots.

WHERE EAGLES DARE

Clint Eastwood’s first war picture includes scenes of Alp scaling. A group of seven commandos is dropped behind enemy lines. Their mission: to rescue an American general who’s being held and interrogated by the SS in a Bavarian mountaintop fortress.

i’ve exercised with denise austin’s TV show for a long time, but i wanted something that focused solely on pilates. unfortunately, i bought the stott pilates advanced matwork tape and i ended up hurting my neck and back.

then denise came out with this new dvd and i wanted to give it a try. after doing this program, i realize i never should have veered away from denise. her exercises are always completely safe but extremely effective (you’ll feel it and see it!), she has an interesting background, fantastic music, and she looks stunning as always.

when you start this workout your mind will be preoccupied, but after a few minutes you are completely engrossed in following the routine. denise takes you through exhilarating, lengthening stretches (mind); standing pilates that work your arms, chest, butt and legs without hurting your neck and back (body); and invigorating, refreshing flowing motions (soul). incredibly, she kept my abs engaged throughout, which is exactly what i wanted in a workout routine. the best part is that the 40 minutes fly by and then i can’t wait till the next time.

i recommend this dvd for any level of fitness: the more advanced you are, the more you’ll be able to engage your different muscles while doing the exercises. working out with denise is the fastest and most enjoyable way to a good body.

Denise Austin’s Mind Body Soul is a 40-minute workout which nicely blends different exercise styles. It is filmed on an outdoors-y looking set, and Denise works out with two background exercisers. The first section, Mind, begins with a 5-minute warm-up which concentrates on breathing and spine stretches and then moves into an additional 5-minutes of standing yoga postures. The poses (warrior II, side angle, triangle) flow nicely and include some more challenging balances such as warrior III and dancer. Denise gives good reminders to focus on your breathing, although she overuses trite phrases such as “your spine is your life line.”

The middle segment, Body, consists of Pilates movements performed mostly in a standing position. In the first 10 minutes, you will replicate Pilates matwork moves such as single leg stretch, criss-cross, double leg stretch, spine stretch, and saw, all while standing erect. However, you will also perform some challenging plank work from a push-up position on the floor. The following 10 minutes require the assistance of a wall. Initially, the wall is used for support during 1-legged moves such as leg kicks, leg circles, rear kicks, and heel beats. Next, the wall is used for some strength moves, including a wall squat, a triceps isometric exercise, and wall push-ups. Throughout this section, Denise repeatedly reminds you to “zip up” your abdominal area so that you really feel the work in your midsection.

The final section of this video, Soul, was a 10-minute dance-type stretch. The exercises performed included mambos, lunges, and additional warrior poses, but the moves seemed to serve as more of a cool-down function rather than cardio or toning. This was my least favorite section of the video; it may have worked better if the Mind and Soul segments had been reversed. Overall, however, I found this to be an enjoyable workout for light toning and general stretching. Denise’s personality is a bit more subdued than usual here, and because the workout moves slowly, I found her much easier to follow than in her aerobic workouts.

Because the nearest ABC station is over 100 miles away, and has been in a running spat with the two satellite/dish companies, up until I got my HD converter hadn’t seen a ABC show in two years. (Life’s too short to try to watch all the downloads) Wish I’d had the chance to see this show first run — thank heaven for reruns.

Wildly funny with a lot of heart, this kind of series is very difficult to pull off. If the creators aren’t careful it’s easy to drown in syrup, and too hard an edge grinds down your characters. “Eli Stone” threads this needle with precision. Themes of belief, faith, whether higher powers are guiding Eli, and a not-so-subtle call for social justice. The first season’s arc grows everyone, not just Eli, and Eli and Nate’s father grows the most — a sweet trick since he’s been dead for ten years. Sliding relationships, office politics, courtroom drama and cases drawn from real life problems are balanced by the rowdy goofiness of his visions’ musical numbers. It seems there’s never a good time to have a full-on hallucination. (”Good Lovin’” from #4 and “I Feel the Earth Move” from #8 are favorites.)

The cast is consistently wonderful. Have loved Victor Garber for years, way before “Alias”, and it’s great to see him not only act but perform. Julie Gonzalo, Natasha Henstridge, Loretta Devine, Matt Letscher, and James Saito are all excellent, not a clunker in the bunch.

But the show hangs on Jonny Lee Miller, and I must admit, he’s been amazing. Miller has an marvelously expressive face. From confusion and embarrassment to desperation, sympathy, sarcasm, cunning, panic, innocence and sometimes fury when he’s defending his clients. You can always see what’s passing in Eli’s head. But Miller’s voice is just as amazing, practically every line has an softness or an edge that pulls your attention, makes you listen. Full blown drama to light comedy, he’s been incredible to watch.

(Warning: spoilers ahead!) Glad the show has been renewed. The creators have carefully planted a half-dozen story threads. Eli and Maggie are destined for each other, but she’s currently engaged. His ex-fiancee, Taylor, still loves Eli, but can’t believe in his visions. In episode 12, Eli both accurately predicted an earthquake and prevented a disaster. But the season’s finale neatly sidestepped how the city will view him, Eli has to go public now. But the most intriguing question is: how has he changed? Has he changed? Eli had the aneurysm causing his visions removed. While the surgery was a success, a hemorrhage and heart attack so damaged his brain his brother was about to pull the plug. Odd thing though, even without the aneurysm, even while comatose, Eli was still fulfilling his mission and trying to convince a dying cancer patient to fight to live. Did the aneurysm give Eli his visions, or was it just a scientific excuse? Will the visions still come? And now Eli has brought himself back, out of the coma. A miracle that everyone will have to accept or deny.

Hope the suits at ABC keep their fingers off this show, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim have proved they know what they’re doing. Really looking forward to the fall.

Warning! Many, many spoilers! Do not read if you want to avoid spoilers!

The 2007-2008 television series has to go down as one of the most unfortunate in recent decades, not primarily because of the quality of the shows - there were, in fact, an unusually large number of very high quality shows - but because of the large number of truncated seasons that so many shows experienced. We also saw a smaller number of midseason series. For instance, the eagerly awaited new Joss Whedon series, DOLLHOUSE, starring Eliza Dushku, was initially planned to appear for seven episodes this spring before returning next fall for a new regular slate of shows. Now it has been postponed to the fall, where it will be the most eagerly anticipated new show of the 2008-2009 season.

But one thing the writers strike did mean was that the few new midseason shows had little or no competition. I was really looking forward to TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, and was delighted when it didn’t disappoint. But just before it debuted I started hearing about a new series called ELI STONE. To be very honest, under normal circumstances I would never have tried it. I would have had a full slate of shows that I was already committed to and I simply wouldn’t have bothered to work it into my schedule. Furthermore, it was set at a law firm, and I generally detest shows set in law firms. But the early reviews by critics were positive if not ecstatic and I had virtually nothing to watch on TV until my favs began to crank out new episodes following the resolution of the WGA strike. So starved for new shows I decided to give it a shot.

From the very beginning ELI STONE was at least decent and fun. I wasn’t blown away, but each episode was enjoyable enough to bring me back the next week. Jonny Lee Miller (who felt more “American” to me than any of the actors from Great Britain or Australia portraying one of my fellow countrymen) was instantly likable as an up and coming attorney who suddenly begins having strange visions as the result of a brain aneurism. His acupuncturist suggests that there might be a purpose to his aneurism, that he might, in fact, be called by his visions to be a modern day prophet. Credence is granted to this as his visions lead him to help people he had seen in his visions but whom he had never met in actual life. Gradually one person after another comes to have “faith” (Eli’s first vision is of George Michael singing the song “Faith” while standing on his coffee table in his living room) in Eli, even the initially hard-hearted head of the law firm, played wonderfully by Victor Garber.

All of this would be well and good except for one thing: with each episode the series developed more and better layers. The show started off good, but by the end of its 13-episode run it was approaching something not far from great. The moment that illustrates ELI STONE at its best - OK, ONE MORE SPOILER ALERT! - was an episode from near the end of the season. Eli has a vision. He is on Time’s Square in New York (made even more unusual in that the series takes place in San Francisco), tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people crowded about, holding signs that read “Live Brave!” Eli sees a platform with a podium and a young but charismatic black man take his place behind the podium and begin to speak, beginning with his name. Eli sees this as a vision that he is supposed to help him. Discovering that he is currently a prisoner in the California penal system Eli takes on his case, eventually leading to uncovering systematic civil rights abuses at the prison. The man he came to help was not released, but at least the possibility of his eventual release was created. You think perhaps at this point that this episode was over, that all the central points had been made. But as Eli leaves the office building his vision returns, the young man once again speaking on the podium. Eli is further astonished to see himself standing at the base of the platform, one of his coworkers standing near him holding what is obviously his and her child. And in the speaker’s next words we understand that he wasn’t the point of this great assembly, which is what Eli had assumed, but was there merely to introduce the central figure for the evening, Eli Stone himself. The episode fades out with an expression of shocked incredulity on Eli’s face. The whole scene might be my favorite moment from any show of the entire 2007-2008 season so far (and that is saying a lot with shows like PUSHING DAISIES and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS out there).

The show is made even better by a very, very good cast. I’ve seen Jonny Lee Miller in a lot of things over the years, from HACKERS (where I believe he met Angelina Jolie, with whom he was long involved) to MANSFIELD PARK, but he’s never been someone I thought of as someone who could anchor a show. But he certainly does here. I already mentioned Victor Garber. This show might center around Eli Stone, but without Victor Garber in his role, many of the vision scenes would not work. Many people may be aware that Garber, in addition to being a talented actor (most know him as Jack Bristow on ALIAS) is a phenomenally gifted Broadway musical performer. He puts his musical skills on display frequently on the show. Similarly, Loretta Devine, who plays Eli’s assistant, is a ferociously talented singer and she gets her own opportunities to sing. The beautiful Natasha Henstridge plays Eli’s former fiancé and Garber’s daughter and brings a lot to the show as someone no longer with Eli, but someone who still cares a great deal for him. I could mention many others, but I’ll stop with two. Matt Letscher has many wonderful moments as Eli’s brother. One of the highpoints of the season occurs when Eli relives his father’s death through the eyes of his brother. And I instantly loved Julie Gonzalo as the new and idealistic assistant who frequently takes second seat in Eli’s cases. Her involvement on the show leads to one of the show’s best shout outs. Eli and Maggie (played by Gonzalo) go to Hawaii in search of a key witness in a case. As they are walking along Maggie makes a suggestion about how they might locate him. In his mildly snappish reply Eli calls her “Veronica Mars.” Gonzalo had, not coincidentally, played Parker on VERONICA MARS, the ditzily happy roommate of Veronica’s friend Mac.

There are two things that I really loved about ELI STONE. First, I really appreciate the fact that it got better and better as the season went along. So if you give this a try and don’t like it at first, just wait. It starts off OK but ends up a thing of beauty. Second, this is perhaps the finest “feel good” show on TV. I wouldn’t rank it as one of the very, very best shows on TV (I’d group it in the next tier of shows). It isn’t quite in the same category as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, LOST, PUSHING DAISIES, or MAD MEN, but it is ultimately upbeat and hopeful to a degree that those are not. FNL has many, many dark moments as many characters perpetually struggle with their own demons. LOST is often dark, but BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is so much darker that it makes LOST look like HAPPY HOUR. MAD MEN deals with a bunch of cut throats. Even PUSHING DAISIES, perhaps the most magical series in the history of TV, mixes much of its magic with some genuine darkness. But ELI STONE is all about hope. With his vision on Times Square we even know — more or less — how this whole thing ends. We know who he will end up with romantically. We know that he will achieve great things. What we don’t know is how things will progressive from here to there. But the happy ending has been put in at the beginning. And moreover the tone of each episode is very positive and upbeat. Like I said, a feel good show.

The only possible problem is that we do not yet know if ABC is going to renew ELI STONE. The ratings for the last few episodes were good if not stunning. The word is that execs in ABC like the show. And I believe that a buzz for it was building near the end of its run. I would be dishonest if I didn’t say that I think the chances for its renewal are very good. In the meantime I recommend that anyone who likes good TV go out and watch this show. Either stream it off ABC.com or get these DVDs when they come out. Make yourself a fan. I promise it won’t be difficult.

These two classic country comedy shows from the 60s are true time pieces of a simpler time. But they are also amusing and extremely charming slices of Americana. Since MPI has released the only authorized “Petticoat” and “Hillbillies” DVDs to date (see their “Ultimate Collections” for both shows), these are the only DVDs to feature the wonderful theme songs that introduce each series over the opening credits. Also, Linda Kaye Henning, daughter of creator-producer Paul Henning and co-star of “Petticoat” (as daughter Betty Jo Bradley) provides informative introductions to all 3 shows on this DVD plus does a sweet Christmas greeting with co-star Frank Cady (known as Hooterville General Store owner Sam Drucker). There’s also some original cast commercials from both series, including a great Jethro recitation of “The Night Before Christmas” for Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. This DVD is a real treat and a great buy. (P.S. There’s also another bonus - a Christmas episode from Henning’s earlier series from the late 50’s — “The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob” with Dwayne Hickman and Rosemary DeCamp.

Oh what fun it is to ride on a first airplane ride with the Clampetts going home to the hills for Christmas!

Here are 2 Christmas episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies and one from its spin-off, Petticoat Junction. But wait! There’s more!! Also included are some vintage commercials that aired with the original broadcasts. When was the last time you heard the now-way unPC jingle:

o/~ Winston tastes good like a ” ” cigarette should o/~

As Jed Clampett would say: WoooooooooooooDoggies!

It’s down-home-spun fun in Hooterville and Beverly Hills for the Holidays. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer
